Water Quality in Lee County: It’s Time to Move Beyond the Status Quo

Water is at the heart of life in Lee County. It supports our environment, our economy, and our quality of life. But more and more residents are noticing changes—murky canals, algae blooms, and growing concerns about what’s really flowing through our waterways.

The truth is, the current approach isn’t working.

For years, we’ve relied on the same systems, the same policies, and the same reactive mindset. That status quo has allowed problems to build instead of being addressed at their source.

We cannot keep doing the same things and expect different results.

I believe it’s time for a more proactive approach—one that prioritizes modern stormwater treatment, improved drainage infrastructure, and real coordination with agencies like the South Florida Water Management District.

It also means enforcing the rules we already have. Regulations without accountability only preserve the status quo—and that’s exactly what needs to change.

Protecting our water means being willing to do things differently, to plan ahead, and to act before problems become crises.

Because clean water isn’t optional—and neither is leadership.
